KEVIN Muscat will officially be unveiled as the new Melbourne Victory coach Thursday morning at AAMI Park.

The former Victory captain will be confirmed as permanent coach for the remainder of this season and beyond.

His first game at the helm is against Wellington Phoenix on Monday night at Etihad Stadium against former mentor Ernie Merrick, who signed him for the inaugural A-League season in 2005-06 from Millwall.

Muscat, 40, has been locked in negotiations with the Victory board in recent days with Ange Postecoglou departing to take charge of the Socceroos but has taken charge of training in the meantime.

On Wednesday he oversaw a gruelling session at Gosch's Paddock with head of performance Peter Cklamovski, Victory youth team coach Darren Davies and youth assistant Vaughan Coveny by his side.

He spent two years as playing-assistant under Merrick before working Mehmet Durakovic and Jim Magilton before spending 18 months under Postecoglou.

Muscat opened up to the Sunday Herald Sun and said he felt he was the best man to carry on the philosophy that Postecoglou had implemented.

"It's not about wanting the job, it's about what's best for the club. We've come too far in terms of what the boss has implemented and what we've built to change and jump on another track," Muscat said.

"Victory has a clear identity now, it's not murky, it has a clear identity — the fans turn up and people buy their memberships based on knowing what they're going to see.

"There's no guarantee about winning but they know what they'll see in terms of performance, what it looks like."

Muscat was capped 46 times by the Socceroos between 1994-2006 and spent a decade abroad playing for Crystal Palace, Wolves, Rangers and Millwall.
