CARLTON will today announce the appointment of Dean Laidley as midfield coach for next season.

Laidley, 46, has worked with St Kilda as midfield coach for the past three seasons after coaching North Melbourne from 2003-09.

He has had a long relationship with Carlton senior coach Mick Malthouse, having played for the West Coast Eagles when Malthouse was coach from 1990-92.

The pair hooked up again at Collingwood from 2000-2002. Laidley was a Premiership player with North Melbourne in 1996.

His appointment will free Rob Wiley up to become director of coaching and development, with John Barker looking after defence and Brad Green forwards.
