City win in extra-time, Spurs need pens

MANCHESTER City needed extra-time to beat Newcastle 2-0 in the Capital One Cup fourth round, while Hull City pushed Tottenham to penalties in a 2-2 before succumbing 8-7.

Following the disappointing last-gasp loss to Chelsea at the weekend, City manager Manuel Pellegrini saw fit to make a total of 10 changes - including drafting in Costel Pantilimon for the much-maligned Joe Hart.

Newcastle, who themselves made five changes after losing the Wear-Tyne derby on Sunday, acclimatised to the evening in a more positive fashion than their visitors, with Papiss Cisse poking wide after just eight minutes.

As City struggled to find their feet in the game, they received a blow after just 10 minutes when summer signing Stevan Jovetic was forced off through injury.

Arsenal have failed to reach the final eight of the League Cup for the first time in 11 seasons after going down 2-0 to Chelsea at the Emirates Stadium.

Shola Ameobi then forced a save from the deputising Pantilimon after half an hour, as the home side continued to grow in confidence.

The Nigerian striker then thought he had opened the scoring just a couple of minutes later, when he tapped home from Cisse's awry effort.

Despite a relatively flat first half, City grew in stature in the second. James Milner should have opened the scoring on the hour mark when Jesus Navas beat a stranded Tim Krul to the ball, but the former Newcastle man failed to hit an open target.

Yoan Gouffran missed a gilt-edged chance as the game headed into extra-time, though, unbeknownst to the Frenchman, he was offside regardless.

Edin Dzeko proved the difference in extra-time, first excellently working an opening for Alvaro Negredo to tap home on 99 minutes, before rounding the keeper moments later and finishing calmly to send City through to the quarter-finals.

Meanwhile, Tottenham secured their place in the Capital One Cup quarter-finals with a penalty shootout win over Hull City after a 2-2 draw White Hart Lane.

Gylfi Sigurdsson put Spurs ahead with a terrific long-range strike in the 16th minute before Hull equalised in comical fashion eight minutes into the second half when Curtis Davies slid in and missed an open goal, only for Brad Friedel to push his effort into the net.

The game went to extra time, with Paul McShane heading Hull in front for the first time before Harry Kane scored another goal from outside the area for Spurs to take the game to penalties.

Aaron McLean's opening spot-kick for Hull was saved by Friedel before Eldin Jakupovic saved Erik Lamela's fourth for Spurs to take it to sudden death.

Friedel eventually saved again, from Ahmed Elmohamady, to take Spurs into the last eight.
