AUSTRALIAN Open junior champion Nick Kyrgios hopes his wildcard into this summer's Brisbane International brings him a match against Roger Federer.
Kyrgios, 18, and Japan's world No.17 Kei Nishikori will play at the Brisbane International, joining confirmed entrants Federer and Lleyton Hewitt.
Canberra right-hander Kyrgios won the Australian Open junior title without dropping a set, and then took advantage of a French Open main draw wildcard to defeat wily Czech Radek Stepanek, the 2009 Brisbane International champion.
"I saw his match against David Ferrer at the US Open after he had won his way through qualifying and I was really impressed with his big game temperament,'' tournament director Cameron Pearson said.
"He looked at home against the world No.3. He can have a really exciting summer and I know Pat Rafter has big wraps on him.''
Far from being daunted by the thought of playing Federer at the Queensland Tennis Centre in the December 29-January 5 tournament, Kyrgios said a match against the 17-time Grand Slam title winner would be something no one could take away from him.
"You're going to keep that for the rest of your life, playing Roger Federer, and you will get an amazing amount of confidence from it," Kyrgios said.
Andy Murray's plans are the subject of fresh intrigue with the Wimbledon champion's coach Ivan Lendl telling reporters in London this week that he expected Murray "to be in Melbourne … in tip-top shape and tip-top form".
Murray had back surgery in August and will decide in the coming week whether he plays the first match of his comeback at an exhibition tournament in Barbados late this month.
Murray would need lead-up tournaments to play the Australian Open, with Doha or Brisbane his options for the first week of the season.
One report suggested Murray would ask for a wildcard to Brisbane if he was ready to play.
"We had heard nothing (from his agents) in the last month or so, so if Andy wants to play Brisbane he is more than welcome to,'' Pearson said.
"I know he was quoted if he doesn't feel he can win the Australian Open he won't play, but all the signs are he is ahead of schedule, so I would expect him to be on the court for a lead-up tournament and then the Australian Open.''
Nishikori, 23, will make a third consecutive appearance in Brisbane.
Nishikori's entry locks in a massive Japanese television audience for the Brisbane tournament, at which he was a semi-finalist last summer.
"All his matches in Brisbane will live telecasts into Japan. That happens wherever he plays in the world as he is one of Japan's most popular athletes,'' Pearson said.

Federer: Tennis needs more drug testing

ROGER Federer called for more drug tests in tennis, claiming players are not tested enough.

The Swiss took time on Thursday to reflect on the fall-out from the Viktor Troicki affair after beating Richard Gasquet 6-4, 6-3 to keep alive his hopes of reaching the semi-finals of the ATP World Tour Finals.

"I just feel like we're not getting maybe tested enough," said the six-time year-end champion.

"I didn't get tested in Basel, in Paris (October). I got tested here after the first match.

"I feel there needs to be more testing done. I feel like I used to get tested more, I think I was tested 25 times in 2003, 2004. Ever since, I think it's been clearly going down this season."

Federer spoke after outrage from world number two Novak Djokovic over the ban handed to his fellow Serb Troicki for skipping a blood test after feeling poorly and coming back to do it the next day in Monte Carlo.

It was a transgression which originally cost him an 18-month suspension before it was cut to 12 months earlier this week.

Croatian Marin Cilic last month completed three months out of the game for accidentally ingesting a banned substance through glucose tablets.

While Djokovic said he no longer trusts the anti-doping system, Federer took the opposite approach, along with Andy Murray, out injured from the year-end event, who tweeted: "Read and respect the rules and everything is very simple."

Federer added: "Overall I trust the system. I think they're all very professional. I just think it's very important that they treat us like normal human beings, not criminals.

"It's fine to treat a guy bad if the guy tested positive, the guy needs to feel the pain, but not if you haven't done anything yet. That, to me, seems like that's the case. So I appreciate that."

Rafael Nadal

RAFAEL Nadal has clinched the year-end No.1 ranking for the third time by defeating Stanislas Wawrinka 7-6 (5), 7-6 (6) at the ATP finals.

Nadal arrived for the prestigious season-ending event knowing two Group A victories at London's O2 Arena would be enough to ensure he couldn't be caught by second-placed Novak Djokovic in the race for the number one ranking.

The Spaniard achieved that aim in typically dominant fashion, beating Swiss seventh seed Wawrinka 24 hours after opening the tournament with a straight-sets win over David Ferrer.

It is the third time Nadal has finished a calendar year in pole position in the rankings - and the first since 2010 -- and he celebrated with a jubilant jig around the court.

He is the first player to end a year at number one three years after his last season-ending top spot.

The 27-year-old's straight-sets victory over Wawrinka also booked his place in the semi-finals of the Tour Finals, with one group match against Tomas Berdych still to come.

Nadal's return to the top is a remarkable achievement given he only came back in February after seven months out with severe knee tendonitis that threatened to cut short his career.

"I had a lot of emotions today, it's the perfect scenario to be the year-end number one," Nadal said.

"After missing this tournament last year, it's been an unbelievable comeback.

"Being number one at the end of the season is something really difficult as there are some unbelievable competitors out there.

"But without my team behind me, it would be hard to think about achieving this, especially after what happened last year.

"Stan played really great. He had chances at the end and I was a bit lucky, but I'm happy to be through to the semi-finals in the last tournament of the year."

Since his return from injury, Nadal has won the French and US Open titles, as well as eight other tournaments, and a maiden triumph at the Tour Finals would be a fitting end to such a memorable campaign.

Wawrinka has enjoyed the best season of his life, qualifying for the Tour Finals for the first time and winning his career-best 50th match of the year with a three-set victory over world number five Berdych on Monday.

But Nadal had won all 11 of his previous meetings with the 28-year-old, who had never even taken a set off the Spaniard.

Wawrinka played well for long periods here, hitting twice as many winners as Nadal, but he could never deliver the knock-out blow and 45 unforced errors proved his downfall.

A double-fault from the Swiss in the fifth game of the first set gifted Nadal the first break of the match.

The usually indefatigable Spaniard began to show a few signs of tiredness as the set progressed and Wawrinka broke back as Nadal served for the set.

To his credit, Nadal refused to let his aching limbs get the better of him even when he trailed 5-4 in the tie-break.

He took the set in slightly fortuitous fashion as Wawrinka stumbled while attempting a routine volley, allowing Nadal to pick him off at the net.

Wawrinka knew he had missed a golden opportunity and he smashed his racquet in frustration before hurling it across the court.

The world number eight's anger surfaced again when he complained to the umpire about Toni Nadal -- his opponent's coach and uncle -- talking too much from his court-side seat.

It looked all over for Wawrinka when Nadal broke for a 3-1 lead in the second set, but the Swiss hit back with a break of his own in the seventh game.

Another tie-break was needed to settle it and Nadal once again rose to the challenge, racing into a 3-0 lead before holding off Wawrinka to seal the win.
