Weather: Warm, sunny day with a forecast top temperature of 32c.

Track: Good (3)

Rail: True

BE WARY: Finally some warm spring weather in Melbourne - just in time for Derby Day at Flemington. The rail is back in the true position for the first time since early September so expect on-pace runners and those to the inside rail to have a slight advantage. At Rosehill, the rail is also back into the true but as happens at most meetings on this track, the jockeys will look to scout about three horses away from the fence at the top of the straight. This is the first meeting at Rosehill four more than four weeks and the track should play fairly.

FLEMINGTON

THE BEST BET: Hucklebuck (race 1) was very impressive in the Gothic Stakes at Caulfield two weeks ago, sprinting clear to win easily by two lengths form Le Mans. He's now won three of his four starts and was very unlucky in his only defeat when third at Moonee Valley earlier this spring. Promising galloper who should have no problem going to 1600m today. Has good tactical speed and can settle where he is comfortable from his favourable draw. A standout selection to get punters off to a winning start today.

THE NEXT BEST: Red Tracer (race 7) is an outstanding form as demonstrated by her runaway win in the Tristarc Stakes at Caulfield last start. The impressive part of her win last start was how strong she was to the line as she romped home by more than two lengths. Terrific mare who is racing as well as ever. She has never won at 1600m but has been placed in an Epsom Handicap previously. She meets her rivals at level weights and only needs to bring her A-game to win this race.

VALUE BET: Bass Strait (race 3) has raced without luck since winning at Caulfield back in September. He ran only ninth but should have finished much closer when ninth to Solzhentisyn in the Toorak Handicap then wasn't suited by the slow early tempo but did well to run second behind the smart Spurtonic in the David Jones Cup last start. Promising young stayer and he can rise to the challenge today, win the Lexus and qualify for the Melbourne Cup. He is around $10 in early betting which is very good value.

THE WHISPER: Jet Away (race 5) ran an absolutely outstanding race to finish fourth in the Caulfield Cup. He pulled hard, raced wide without cover, made a long run around the field to join the leaders about 1000m from home, raced to the front on the turn and somehow held on to run fourth behind Fawkner. He ran a blinder at his previous start as well when a close seventh in the Turnbull Stakes to Happy Trails. Needs to win the Mackinnon to get into the Melbourne Cup - and he will.

THE BEST BET: Index Linked (race 5) has improved steadily with each run this preparation and followed a second behind Leebaz over 1500m on the Kensington track by beating that horse over 1600m at Randwick last start. He did over-race and laid in under pressure but still found the line strongly to run down a smart type last start. He is at his peak now after three runs from a spell and last preparation he also won third-up then strung three wins together in quick succession. Index Linked hasn't been to 1800m before but gives the impression this is what he has been looking for. Very hard to beat.

NEXT BEST: Taxmeifyoucan (race 7) was very good first-up when a luckless fourth behind Riva De Lago in the Theo Mark Stakes. He ran out of galloping room at a vital stage that day or he would have finished much closer. He was very disappointing at Caulfield last start when finishing at the rear of the field behind Boban in the Moonga Stakes at Caulfield. He didn't seem to handle the reverse way last start and has been whisked back to Sydney. Talented galloper on his day and won the Scone Guineas brilliantly earlier this year. Well-weighted on the limit in a very winnable race.

VALUE BET: Quick's The Word (race 6) has been knocking on the door to break through and gets her chance today. She has run second in each of her three runs this preparation, going under each time by less than a length. The 1100m suits and she will appreciate John Kissick's 3kg claim. Usually begins well and races up on the speed, making her own luck. Quick's The Word is at double figure odds - she's each way all day.

THE WHISPER: Polarmore (race 3) looks to have plenty of talent. Rocketed to the line on debut when third to Adage at Canterbury then made significant improvement and impressed when she comfortably defeat Supreme Effort at the Randwick Kensington meeting last start. By champion stallion More Than Ready (sire of More Joyous) out of Golden Slipper winner Polar Success and should appreciate the Rosehill 1200m today. She will handle the step up to Sydney Saturday class with ease.
