ENGLISH raider Side Glance caused a minor upset to win the Mackinnon Stakes - and the horse's first Group 1 - with a super front-running performance at Flemington.
The seven-year-old, who finished sixth in last week's Cox Plate, toughed it out to beat the fast-finishing Dear Demi, who turned in a slashing Melbourne Cup trial, with Moriarty in third place.
Trainer Andrew Balding, whose mother bred the horse, praised the ride of Jamie Spencer, saying he had special affinity with the horse.
"Jamie has always ridden the horse well, we are just thrilled he could ride him today," Balding said. "He took the bull by the horns and did a great job."
"It is a great thrill to win here."
David Hayes' Jet Away finished out of the placings.
